New Link

Overview

A link describes the exact or offset virtual association that can be made between two or more similar controls. A typical example would be the grouping of two faders in order to produce a stereo gain control. It is possible to create a link using any controls, found on any control panel (including Logic Object control panels), as long as they operate in the same manner. For example, a link cannot be created between a mute control and a gain control. A link can also further describe the virtual association created between certain control panel objects and certain logic objects.

About links

When a link is created, hierarchical entries are added to the Venue Explorer in the Soundweb London Links folder. Each entry shows the Link’s name, type and HiQnet node address and name of the device in which the Link exists.  The entry can be renamed, modified, added to a group or deleted at any point using the right-click context menu. The linked parameters are displayed when the entry is expanded. Each branch will show the name of the control and the processing object from which it derives. The Soundweb London Links folder is displayed in the Venue Explorer while in a device’s Configuration or when editing a custom panel. Links are also listed in the Linking folder.

Creating a link between Control Panel controls

A link is created by selecting a number of controls within a custom control panel that already has parameter assignments, and clicking the New Link button from the Parameters section of the ribbon. A dialog box appears prompting for a name and a link type. Clicking on 'OK' will establish the link and create its corresponding entry in the Venue Explorer. Alternatively, parameters can be assigned to a link by first clicking on New Link, then dragging and dropping the link from the Venue Explorer onto the parameters that require linking.

Parameters can be removed from the Link by right-clicking and selecting Delete.

Types of links

Exact:  All parameters will track together at identical values, regardless of which parameter is modified.

Soft:  All parameters will track together with any offset values that existed before the link was enabled

Radio:  (inter-cancelling) - Allows only one two-state parameter to be 'on' at one time. (does not apply to faders or rotaries)

Radio Off: (inter-cancelling with cancelling) - Allows only one two-state parameter to be 'on' at one time and allows the parameter to be set to 'off' (does not apply to faders or rotaries)

Moving a link to another device

When a link is created it specifically exists in one of the devices in the Venue, so if that device is not online the link will not work. The link entry in the Venue Explorer states which device the link exists in. The right-click context menu offers the option to move the link to another device. A dialog box will appears listing the available devices in which to move the link.    Once a link has been moved, the device name for the link in the Venue Explorer will have changed accordingly.

Moving links into groups

Links listed in the Soundweb London Links folder are presented in the Venue Explorer in alphabetical order. Links can be organized into groups which makes them more convenient to find among a long list. The right-click context menu offers the option to create a group or move a link into an existing group. New links will be added to the group which was last selected in the Venue Explorer.

Object Link (Only available if a Soundweb Contrio Server is in the venue)

Exact: All matchable parameters will track together at identical values, regardless of which parameter is modified.

Parameters which cannot be mapped will be ignored.

When adding a new object to a link, all objects currently assigned to the link and objects selected must be compatible.

An unassigned link is created if no objects are selected and the New Link button is clicked. This link may be drag/dropped from the Venue Explorer onto any object that is assignable.

Rules

Adding to existing links

Once a link entry exists, additional controls may be associated with the link at any time. To add to an existing Link, click the Add To Link button in the Parameters section of the ribbon. Click and drag the link entry from the Venue Explorer onto the control you wish to add. A plus sign will appear near control to confirm that this link is allowed.

Creating a link toggle button

Once a link has been made, it may be necessary during use to temporarily disable it. Every link entry in the Venue Explorer may have a toggling button associated with it, positioned onto a custom control panel.

To create a link toggle button, simply click and drag the link entry from the Venue Explorer onto a custom control panel.

An on/off button will appear in a link enabled state. Operate this button to disable or enable the link.

Creating a link with logic objects

It is possible to form a link between certain logic objects and a variety of audio parameters. The logic objects that can be part of a link are Logic Source, Logic End, Logic Comparator, Logic Value and Logic Source Select. When an audio parameter is dropped onto a Logic object or vice versa then a link is created. This type of link can also be created manually  click on the New Link button in the Tools section of the Soundweb London ribbon. The link entries will then appear in the Venue Explorer.

Notes

Nesting links is not possible in Audio Architect.

Deleting a link toggle button does not delete the link entry.

It is highly recommended that suitably descriptive names be given to links as they are created.
